境町は水と深い関りを持ち、江戸時代には鬼怒川、利根川、江戸川などを利用した水運の拠点「境河岸」が作られ、江戸と奥州を結ぶ河岸の町として発展しました。
古くは縄文時代の頃から沿岸部には人が住んでいた形跡があり、その形跡は今でも住居跡や貝塚、古墳などの遺跡から伺い知ることができます。
